Synchronized Crochet

216/365

Tonight the Harry Potter marathon continued. We pulled our first double header with the fifth and sixth movies, and lots of crochet. Emily is almost done with her blanket, and I completed the second of seven repeats on my backpack. Now we only have two more movies to go! I think we'll pull another double header sometime next week to knock those two out. I'm so thankful for a manager at work like Emily who has lots of the same interests as I do. We hardly ever run out of things to talk about, including the fact that we're both old souls.

Self Portrait (31/52)

Today we drove out to Tyler to see my grandpa + great aunt, and of course I read on the way there, then switched between reading and crocheting on the way back. I was so pumped to spend some time with my family, and left with an overwhelming sense of joy from being with my family.

Also, I promise I have other shirts. If you don't know what I'm talking about, click here and here.

Thoughts On One Year of Blogging

214/365

Last week marked one year since I started this blog. I did have a different blog before that, which you can view here.

I'm not a serious blogger, in that I don't have post in hopes to bring attention to my blog, at least not on the scale as most bloggers do. It's not a pride thing, but just that this blog is like my photo journal. Realistically, I won't be printing my photos out and scrapbooking them or anything. I'm 18. It's not a priority for me. At all. I keep track of the stories and days behind my pictures by blogging.

I challenged myself to blog every day this year, and so far I have succeeded. I enjoy it, for the most part. I mostly just feel bored with it. But, here in a few weeks, I'll be heading up to attend school in Chicago for 4(+??) years, so that will add lots of excitement. There are some blog "features" I'd like to start, but I haven't nailed down the specifics of them yet, and I probably won't until 2015.

Blog features I currently have and what I think of them:
- Weekly Self Portrait
I love this. They aren't always (are they ever?) incredible portraits I spend lots of time composing, but they are me. I plan on doing this forever. FOREVER. I don't know if blogging will still be a thing if/when I get married, etc., but if so I will still be doing this then. Even if blogging isn't a thing, I still will want to take portraits every week. This is a keeper.
- Work in Progress Wednesday
I'm considering editing this. I will probably cut out the poster-background when school rolls around, but I still want to document my progress on whatever project I have going, which brings me to another thing I want to change/consolidate:
- Monthly Reading Update
This is awesome for the booktubers that I follow, but not for me. I'm no good at book reviews. I think I rely way too much on how I'm feeling and not enough on the actual book, so I'd rather just update, weekly, where I'm at in my reading in my "WIP Wednesday" posts (mentioned above). Because, really, isn't a book you're reading...in progress?? I think so.
- Yearly Goal Updates Each Month
Yes and no. I may do this every other month, just because it takes an hour or so at the end of each month to gather all the information. Then again, I want to have less goals each year. Until I finish school, which could be 4-6 years, depending on whether or not I end up doing my masters (there! I said it!), I will probably do a maximum of five goals for the year, and I'm not even sure about that.
- Project Posts
I haven't done one of these in a while, because I haven't finished any projects, but I still like this. Every time I finish a new project I post about it. I don't post about knitting the same hat five times, but rather hat A, hat B, and hat C. Not hat a (1), hat a (2), and so on. I will keep this up, probably in about the same fashion as they are now.

I don't think there was anything else I wanted to write about on this topic. I like my blog. When I started my first blog, I purposely didn't say anything for a few months because I wanted to figure out my voice. I think I've got it down now, though, but I know it will change as I change. I have to say, though, that Elise is my favorite blogger, possibly mainly because of her voice in her writing, especially in her older posts. It's just relaxed, and that's kind of what I aim for. You can tell she's more purposeful in her writing now, which is because her audience has grown. I've still got a small audience, so my posts are going to be more casual.

I think I'm just spewing random things now, so I'll leave with a mantra of sorts from the series I'm currently reading: "A need does not constitute a call." - Paige Torn by Erynn Mangum

(Don't even get me started on my tags. They are in a very rough state, and I'm not quite sure where to even begin fixing them.)

Early August Ramblings

213/365

Watching a commencement address by Neil Gaiman wasn't the most exciting part of the first day of August. I went to see The Fault In Our Stars with my sister tonight, since it's one of a few books the three of us have read. Don't ask me my opinion on it because I don't know. I still don't know what I think of the book and I read that months ago. I do know, however, that we had fun, and I enjoyed sitting between my two sisters whispering sassy comments back and forth. What else are sisters for?

I planned on getting lots of crochet done when we got home, but then I ended up chatting with my mom for a while, hearing about her day. Then I had to watch an episode of Supernatural - if you're a fan you know which one I mean: season five, episode four, which is set on August 1, 2014. I set that reminder months ago, like when I watched the show last fall. It made me miss watching the show a little bit, but...nine seasons. I don't think I will rewatch the whole thing until it's done.

Will I be able to finish this backpack before move-in day, which is only 19 days away? I don't know. While I think I'll have a good chunk of time on Sunday to work on it, I'm not sure I can say the same for the rest of the week. I need to declutter/clean/organize most of my room and my files. I think I have pictures (going back four or so years) on three different computers. I'd like to get them all together soon. Little things like that keep me scatter-brained.

And the reason behind my slight shaking while writing this whole post (because I'm like a chihuahua when I get excited about things): it looks like I may finally have a dorm room! When they announced dorm assignments in June I was placed in overflow, which does not mean that you sleep in the hall or the streets, but rather that a double occupancy room may have to become a triple occupancy one if not enough people drop out, for lack of a better term. I was in this last year, and eventually got moved around, not that it mattered because I wasn't able to go, so it was a bummer to be placed in it again. I remember from last year, however, that they emailed when there was an update, but they haven't emailed me about getting a room, which is why I'm not 100% sure that the one I see online is even correct. I was just checking it, like I do each night, and happened to see that it was different. Regardless, it's nice to be somewhere.

This post is a decent length, and it's getting late, so I should probably head to bed. I'm just feeling a little crazy tonight, I suppose. The Chick-fil-A I work at has had people from our "sister" store (we have the same Operator) at our location all month while their store is being remodeled, and I think today was most people's last day. Their store should be reopening next week, so we will have a lot less people each day. While it was nice to always have things stocked, I'm looking forward to having a purpose again. My job the last few weeks first consisted of cleaning and reorganizing nearly everything in the store, then the last few days I've been training people on the new coffee - both hot and iced - that rolls out Monday. There's another post to write...

2014 Goals Update: July

212/365
A selfie with my dad on our bike ride tonight.

July is over!! That is CRAZY. The month is definitely ending on a high note. I'm not sure I'll ever fully believe that I was accepted to my dream school (twice), but it's getting more and more real each day.

The weather today was perfect. Like 70F. In Texas. In JULY. When I went to check the mail today I knew I had to take a bike ride after dinner. I planned on going alone, but my mom hinted to my dad that she would prefer if he went with me, so he did! We went somewhere between 1-1.5 miles, stopping halfway to relax, which is when I took both the photos above. Is my dad's goatee wicked or what? It's even out of the frame!

Anyway, onto how I'm doing with my goals for this year!

1: one self portrait (per week)
Success!
week twenty-seven | week twenty-eight | week twenty-nine | week thirty

2: compose photos (every day)
Success, I think. I've gotten a little lazy with tracking it the way I did the rest of the year, but I'm determined to get it back to normal before Chicago.
184 | 186 | 189 | 191 | 196 | 197 | 198 | 199 | 200 | 202 | 205 | 206 | 207 | 212 - which is at the top of this post

3: read the Bible (every day)
Nope. I did a little bit for a few days at the beginning of the month, but then stopped.

4: journal (daily)
Fail. I did for a little while, then got behind (as usual) and haven't gotten caught up, which is so annoying to me.

5: blog (daily)
Success! I'm happy there's at least one thing I'm able to keep up with!

6: walk
I did take a walk the other night with the dog! Yay! I expect the walking to increase exponentially over the next few months...yay city living!!

7: bike
Success! Tonight! Like I talked about above! It was so much fun. I've seen some talk in our Moody Facebook group about bringing bikes to school, but I did some Googling and I think there are some public bikes in Chicago so I won't be bringing my own for a while unless I end up seeing the need.

8: 52 projects
Fail! Can you believe it? I have completed one project this month, but it was this project in different colors, so it didn't get it's own blog post.

9: 52 books
Success! A few less than last month, but still nine books completed! I'm definitely back into a reading slump, however.
what I read this month

10: experiment with photography
A little bit of success. With over a year of shooting manual under my belt (I've always shot in manual...no automatic for me!) I feel better acquainted with my camera these days, I think. I've had trouble with video the whole time I've had my T3i, but I think I may have found a solution. I haven't tried it out yet, but I will soon. I finally did SOMETHING with magic hour here. Then here and up above I did some bokeh. Much hipster. Very bokeh.

11: make six new meals for the family
Fail. Good theory, lazy girl.

12: learn to play the keyboard
Fail.

13: at least one photo book
Fail.

14: travel
Fail.
