The Joy in Fiber

This afternoon I made progress on a box of papers I brought home from my first semester. I was able to dwindle it down to notes and only a few sentimental pieces of paper. During this, I also went through a lot of papers from classes. One of those sets of papers was my portfolio from College Writing that we turned in at the end of class then reviewed with our professor a week later. At my review, our professor, the source of many laughs during the semester, scared me into thinking that my revision of my narrative essay was no good. However, it was the opposite: she loved it so much that she wouldn't let me keep the copy that was printed in the portfolio and I got an A- in the class for the semester! I've been meaning to share this essay for six months now, and now seems as good a time as any.

This is the picture that helped me in writing this essay. It was my ninth self portrait in the challenge of 2014, and you can find the original blog post here.

"Sunday afternoon, dinner is cooking and I’m snuggled up by the fire. It feels too good to be true that I’m able to spend the day knitting and relaxing. Knitting is the one thing that instantly calms me when I pick up the needles and slip the yarn through my fingers. Fiber and family, what more could a girl ask for?

It’s early March, still just cold enough for to wear a sweater here in north Texas. My fingers, familiar with the throwing and pulling through of the yarn, are chilly despite the fire beside me and the handmade quilt I’ve enveloped myself up in. This quilt, made of prints with desserts and food and quilted with little ants, has been my companion for the last six months. It was a gift from a woman who is a grandmother to my sisters and I, who are without a biological grandmother. I’ve learned the trick of becoming a burrito with it: standing on top of the chair I’m in and then wrapping it around me, sitting on top of most of it. The heat from the fire doesn’t quite heat my toes, so this blanket is just the right thing. The fire my father started when we got back from church is still going strong, the flames steadily licking the insides of the fireplace. I glance over at the burnt brick which surrounds the fire. All that now-black brick is significant of the 14 years my father has burned fires in there to keep us warm. He can’t see it from his seat on the couch a few feet from me, so he asks me for updates on how it’s doing, and whether or not he needs to come over to stoke it, bringing it back to life. I tell him that it’s doing just fine, especially in keeping me warm. The warmth radiating from the fire continues to warm my arms which aren’t able to stay inside my little cocoon, because my navy blue sweater doesn’t seem to be doing its job of keeping my arms warm. Mom is walking back into the living room from the kitchen, joining us all in watching TV. I can smell the dough from tonight’s bread all the way from the other side of the living room. My mouth waters just thinking about the warm bread lathered in butter which we’ll be eating soon.

I’m working on a hat for my little sister’s best friend, Emily, who is a young teenager that has more wisdom than most adults. I had agreed to make this for her a month ago, and bought the yarn soon after that. Other projects had occupied my time, but now it was her turn. This pattern has been on my needles a couple times previously, so this time I feel confident enough, with my previous experience, to make a few changes. Earlier in the day I had taken out all the work I had done - only an inch, thankfully - and tried again with a smaller needle so the fabric would be a little thicker, and therefore a lot warmer for her. Emily is definitely one who deserves a nice, handknit hat. In the five years my sister and her have been friends, Emily has been a great encouragement to both my sister and I. Even when she has a sleepover with my sister, her and I end up talking for at least half an hour. She’s an old soul who will appreciate the amount of time being spent to make this hat. As the oldest of five, I have plenty of faith she is more than responsible enough to keep track of the hat. When I knit something, I find it important to know the recipient will value the time and money put into it. I look around at my family members, and think of what I can possibly knit them for Christmas. It may be nine months away, but these things take time. I cringe at the thought of knitting something for my loved ones that won’t be a practical item in their everyday lives. I try not to worry about it now, however, because this moment, when we’re all just relaxing together, is an invaluable gift. I’ve been by this fire all day, entertained with House Hunters, a NASCAR race, and a few (knitting) podcasts, so the progress on the hat is stunning. Maybe I can finish it by the time I go to work tomorrow?

I complete another knit stitch, then move the stitches further back on the needle to prevent them from falling off. I feel the half-completed hat fall gently on my blanket-covered lap as I reach down to the ground, into my knitting bag at my side, and pull out the measuring tape again. Four inches is a lot to have completed in a matter of hours. I toss the pink measuring tape back into the bag, then admire the fabric that has come into being in a matter of hours. This pattern was the first I made two short months ago after I first got my knitting needles on Christmas day. In that short amount of time, I have made several items, my pride inflating a little more each time I bind off, marking the completion of another knit project. I take a deep breath, inhaling the familiar smell of burning wood. I didn’t enjoy math while in high school, but now I can appreciate the mechanics of it in this hobby of mine. It requires a lot more math than I first thought it would, yet that fuzzy feeling in my heart gets stronger with each passing moment. It turns out that calculating the number of stitches I need to start with is a kind of math that doesn’t bother me; not when it has such a great reward, anyway. Maybe I’m more of a numbers person than I ever thought before.

Every time I find even a few moments to knit a few stitches, I can physically feel myself relax. The simple, yet repetitive action is just the right thing to work on while watching my favorite show, waiting to clock on at work, or while enjoying some family time. I feel as though my heart will burst from the simple joy of just being with my family while also making good progress on this hat. My heart relaxes as I pick up my project again, continuing on according to the pattern."

FO Friday: Simple Crochet Shrug

Heeeeeeeeeeeeey look I'm blogging! A finished object (FO)! Shocking, I know. This was one of 20 projects I had marked on ravelry to finish up in some way. For this project, it was that it needed to be seamed together and then photographed. That's it. It took me less than thirty minutes to seam it Wednesday night while hanging out with my friend Emily, then before work yesterday I posed for some pictures in it.

It could definitely be better. First, I would not toss out the leftover yarn I had, so that I could seam it using matching yarn. While the contrasting color would be nice in certain palletes, I'm not sure this was the one to experiment on. Good thing it's for me and perfectly matching is not really my style. The second thing I would change would be the drape of the fabric. While it will be nice to have a cozy + warm shrug for classes and cold dorm rooms, I originally wanted something that was a lot lighter. Thankfully, it's a very simple pattern, so I definitely can see myself making at least one more of these and perfecting it as I go.

Regarding blogging, I definitely want to get back into it. Since arriving back home, it has simply been my priority to spend time with loved ones, work, and get various things organized. Now that my books are mostly organized and over half of the Ravelry projects I was stressing out about have been settled, I can start to think about blogging and getting back into creating things (like the sweater I cast on yesterday!!!).

See ya soon!

Self Portrait (52/52)

362/365

The last self portrait for the year! I can hardly believe it. I'm not totally pleased with the shots I got because I know I could have done much better had I put in even a little more effort. I really enjoyed this challenge, however, so I will be continuing it. This week's self portrait is me, finishing up my first fair isle project for a Christmas present for Diana, my best friend.

Self Portrait (51/52)

I'm home this week! What better way to celebrate than to hug my Pillow Pet? Well, I can think of a lot of things to do, but this was the easiest self portrait to set up, so it is what it is. (:

Self Portrait (50/52)

We've finally hit 50 self portraits for the year! Only a few more to go! How is that possible!

I wanted this self portrait to include my friends, but completely forgot. Today involved eating some deep dish before going home for the semester, then studying for our two finals tomorrow morning. I don't feel great about either of them, but I've done my best, and I would have to do very poorly to fail. Ds get degrees. I'm ok with that sometimes.

Self Portrait (49/52)

Sunday always seem to fly by! I always hope to get several things done, but then I blink and it's time for bed. Sigh. I attempted homework in the library tonight, then came back with Marika. Just a little nighttime reading, then off to bed! Last week of classes!

Self Portrait (48/52)

Today Ally & I took a walk down Michigan Avenue to window shop, so a selfie was necessary! More pictures tomorrow...

Self Portrait (47/52)

Tonight we had our bro/sis Thanksgiving feast!

I was in the kitchen for a few hours this afternoon working on my contribution (funfetti cookies!) and spent the time chatting with girls on the floor. We all headed over around six and were greeted after getting out of the elevators by our bros! We took the food we had brought into their lounge then went back to join the little photobooth area they had set up.

We had tons of fun playing the opposite of Charades (one person leaves the room while everyone else decides on a motion, the person comes back and has to guess it: hilarious), ate, then heard an epic tale by a few bros. Crazy!

Most everyone got all dressed up for the occasion, some bros even in partial suits (not sure the technical term for that...but ya know). Laura did my hair, pictured above. Epic, right? She rebraided my hair after I showered tonight so hopefully it will be a pretty wavy after she fixes it up tomorrow.

College ain't too shabby.

Self Portrait (46/52)

This is me at 3am eating macaroni and cheese made by Leslie. I'm not sure when I'll be sleeping, but I have two papers and a test due tomorrow...so there's that.

It was snowing today! Only flurries, but there was a little sticking which was fun to see!

Self Portrait (45/52)

313/365

Today was nice. I did a little bit of homework, but more importantly I made some fun memories with friends. I ended the night with ripping back on the shrug I am this close to finishing, then watching Gilmore Girls and snacking. Guys, I really want to finish this shrug soon! Christmas projects need to be started!!

Dorm Room - Fall 2014 - REARRANGED

Like my turkey hat? I saw it at Target and couldn't pass it up, so now I'm just looking for a time to use it.
The under sink arrangement Leslie did blew my mind!! I love it!
It's a somewhat crazy mess at the end of my bed, but it's where food + projects go.
Look at all the space I have!!
I knew I wanted at least one verse on my mirror, so I found this one while working on my second Old Testament paper and it seems fitting, the enemies being homework. (;

That's right: I rearranged my room! It was actually several weeks ago, before Missions Conference, but I just kept putting off taking pictures and everything. I LOVE IT THOUGH. Leslie helped me out
a ton, and it's just such a better space now. The openness puts my mind at ease. It (almost) makes me hesitant enough to not switch rooms next semester, but only almost.

You can see the fall decorations my mom sent with my sister: the (fake) fall leaves and pumpkin magnets on the fridge. She is so thoughtful. [:

Self Portrait (44/52)

While it would be respectful of me to say that I sat in bed yesterday like a good student and finished this book then wrote the report with plenty of time left in the day, the reality is that I read for a little while, then FaceTimed with my family. Well, we were on FaceTime, but talked on the phone because it kept disconnecting and we couldn't hear each other. Ghetto, perhaps, but worth it.

While on the phone with them, I remembered that Nik Wallenda's walk across the river was tonight! I had wanted to go, but none of my friends were available, so I decided to post about it in our bro/sis Facebook group. Thankfully, one of the girls on my floor texted me not long after and said she was there. It only took a little deliberation with Ally to decide to go, so I grabbed the essentials and booked it to the river.

Once I got down there it was a little crazy, but really not too busy. It was only difficult trying to figure out how to get to the loop side because they had some sidewalks blocked off, but eventually I figured it out and was able to meet up with my friend. I got there about six, which was when the broadcast began. We saw him testing the wire not long after that, yet he didn't start walking until 7:30. We were able to get a few updates from those we knew watching on TV or online.

It was pretty surreal to see it in person. His first walk, at a 15 degree incline, went over the river from Marina City's West Tower to the Leo Burnett Building. We could see his feet moving! Very smooth. It hurt my neck to look up for those six minutes, but it was definitely worth it. Once he finished, some headed back to campus because we didn't know how long it would be until the next walk, but I stayed with a few others that booked it over to a better spot so we could see the second walk, which involved him going back to the West Tower (by car..he didn't walk back over) and crossing to the East Tower while BLINDFOLDED. We watched from under the el, but it happened so fast.

We headed back to campus, stopping at Subway for dinner. I took Ally her Subway dinner, ended up watching half a movie with Leslie and Marika, then finished the book and finished my paper. I didn't go to bed until 3:45, but it was worth it to see Nik Wallenda!

Self Portrait (43/52)

Today we went to the top of the world! Well, kinda. We got to the Skydeck around noon, and were up at the top an hour later. Not too shabby! I love heights. We did a lot of other exploring around the city, making the most of our day, but that will have to wait for another day! For now, let's just talk about how the film on the glass is ghetto!

Self Portrait (42/52)

292/365

This is what today looks like, since the second reading report for Old Testament Survey is due tomorrow! I'm still not done, which is a bummer, and it looks like I'll be up until 3 or 4 in the morning working on...but that's college, I suppose.

Self Portrait (40/52)

I'm really trying to get back into reading each night, because maybe then it will help me get to sleep sooner and I'll get actually make progress on this book...

This is a lame representation of the fun weekend I spent with my parents. I miss them already and am definitely looking forward to Christmas break when I can go home and just relax with my family.

Self Portrait (39/52)

Today was such a blast. The highlight of it, besides the fact that today is my room's birthday (9/28 in 928), was playing ultimate frisbee on the beach at night. It was so fantastic. Running in the sand is hard, but worth it. I'm not the most competitive person, but I'm doing my best and having fun. Plus a few of us got in the water (only to the knees for me, all the way in for others) which felt awesome. Also, who knew sand could be so cold?!

This next week will be weird, but awesome. Especially since the end of the week means MY PARENTS ARE HERE. I can't wait to see them! If you could, please pray for my mommy who hurt her back the other day and would really like to feel well during their trip!

Self Portrait (38/52)

264/365

Today I finished my first paper! I had started it a few weeks ago and got halfway through, then my momentum crashed and I barely worked on it in the last two weeks or so. Today, however, I finished it up around 1:30, formatting and all. I'll go to the library after my 8am tomorrow and get it printed and turned in, well before the 4pm deadline. Now I'm on to plan the next one...

Self Portrait (37/52)

Another self-portrait that makes it look like I spend all my time at my desk, when really the truth is far from it. Right now is really the only time I've spent at my desk, seeing as how I went to church, did some price checking between Walmart and Walgreen's, sat in bed watching One Tree Hill and trying to find a new project to start, went to dinner with some floor sisters, dropped off dinner for Ally at work, watched Frozen with a few more floor sisters, then worked in the library while Ally worked there. A busy, but good, day. I wasn't in the best mood at lunch, but some time to myself then out with others has helped it. Now I just finished putting together my schedule for this week and, wow, I should go to bed.

Self Portrait (36/52)

Same place I took my self portrait as last week, but this I did spend time doing this today...so it's not irrelevant. I went to church, had lunch, got a little organized, ran an errand, celebrated Christmas, started sewing up my backpack, and went to open hall (the only time the opposite gender is allowed on the floor) for our brother floor. We played a game and marveled at how much larger their rooms are than ours. Now it's 9pm, but I didn't get enough homework done this week so Cassidy and I are headed out soon to go visit Ally in the library, so I figured I should get this done so I can crash once we get back. Aaaaand I haven't had dinner yet, aside from some ramen a bro made. College!

Self Portrait (35/52)

This is about the position I was in tonight while on FaceTime with my family. It was the first time the five of us were "together" since we left two weeks ago! Clearly I am not on FaceTime in this picture, but posed for how I looked when I called my older sister Jenna after the FaceTime to ask her questions about paperwork because, yes, I am going to be working at the Chick-fil-A here in Chicago! I'll start sometime in the next week, so it will be fun to learn how another store works, especially such a unique location!

Today I walked with a group to The Moody Church. We went to the regular service and then the college Bible study. Am I really in college? After lunch in the SDR (student dining room...obvs), I watched August Rush with my friend Ally, who is on the same floor as me, while showing her how to finish off her first knit hat in the round. Then we had a Wal-Mart trip and walked to Papa John's to pick up dinner. We ate in my room while watching Listen to Your Heart, so now my room smells like pizza. No complaints from me, though.

It's time for bed now since tomorrow I have a lot of Old Testament summarizing to do, but if you're interested in a little bit reading, check out my friend Ally's blog post from tonight!
